about
In our quest to record more frequently and on our own terms this song started as a test for new music hardware and software acquired last year. Green Crescent was written to witness the time of the March full moon, the Worm Moon. Marking the long yearned for end of winter, in our rural marsh-filled and forested part of Maine early spring is a very special time when the atmosphere fills with the scent of earth and un-death, the sky drips with pouring rain and cold blue mist, days are longer and less bitter and yet the hordes of black flies and mosquitos still sleep. Frogs return surprisingly early and our true harbinger of life, the woodcock, shouts its uncanny cry and laces the twilight with the eerie sound of its wings in flight.
Incorporating all these sounds with field recordings from the swamp outside, the rhythm and melody are meant to evoke the slow trudge of life back from the cold, the embryonic mysticism of the spring stars reflected in vernal pools and the unstoppable cryptic power of the trees as they bud and flower. The lyrics focus on the swamp as an ancient place of refuge and power for the outcast and marginalized as well as a source of life and renewal.
